Markup / Margin Calculator
Calculate markup and margin from cost and selling price — stop confusing the two
The Difference
Markup
Percentage of cost added on top. A $50 item sold for $75 has a 50% markup.
markup = (price − cost) ÷ cost × 100
Margin
Percentage of selling price that is profit. That same $75 item has a 33.3% margin.
margin = (price − cost) ÷ price × 100
Same item, same profit — different percentages. Markup is always higher than margin. Businesses that confuse the two underprice consistently.
